Taken from the Mitsubishi Matters press release dated 12 May 2014:
Mary and Emily, who are both Mitsubishi Brand Ambassadors, spent an hour chatting to fans and signing autographs at the Mitsubishi Motors stand on Sunday, May 11, 2014.
Mary, a member of the Team GB’s triumphant equestrian squad at London 2012, has completed Badminton on 21 previous occasions. She took the decision to retire her horse Imperial Cavalier on Saturday.
Mary, who drives a Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, said: “It was a very big, challenging cross-country course. The rain and soft ground made it a little bit more difficult so it was a big disappointment. But no horses were hurt and no riders were hurt. We all felt it was great to go back to a big, exciting Badminton course.
“Imperial Cavalier is 17 so he won’t ever do Badminton again. I will talk to the owners, he might come out on one or two events this autumn or they might decide to retire him. He has been the horse of a life-time.”
The 18-year-old, who drives a Mitsubishi Mirage, said: “It’s been an amazing event, even though the weather was a bit patchy. There was lots of drama, which was great and luckily no one was seriously hurt even though there was quite a few falls.”
As for her own hopes for competing at Badminton in the future Emily said: “Next year might be pushing it a bit but hopefully if not next year I will be here the year after that.”
Ellen Harvey, 15, and her sister Millie, 10, both from Hook Norton in Oxfordshire, were delighted to meet the equestrian pair. Keen horse rider Ellen said: “We watched Mary ride this weekend so it was really nice to be able to meet her.”
As for her vehicle, Mary added: She said: ‘I love the Mitsubishi Outlander. I find it’s very economical and I really enjoy driving it. It’s got a big boot, which is great for all my horse bits and bobs. It’s perfect for me.”
